Why Clean Green?

How you clean, and what you clean with, matters. It matters to your home, your family and your planet.

Consider that:
  • Conventional cleaners contain harmful chemicals that find their way into the air, our water and even our bodies. The EPA recognizes conventional degreasers, all-purpose cleaners, glass cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and certain laundry products as household hazardous waste.
  • 81,000 chemicals have been registered with the EPA in the last 30 years, and fewer than 20% have been tested for toxicity.
  • 218,316 reported poison exposures in 2005 were from household cleaning products.
  • EPA studies indicate that elevated concentration of household chemicals persist in the air. Long-term exposure to chemicals inside your home may be harmful to you, your family and your pets.
  • Common household cleaners give off fumes that can potentially increase the risk of children developing asthma, the most common chronic childhood disease.
  • 90% of our time is spent indoors. The EPA reports indoor pollution is up to 5 times higher than outdoors. Common conventional household cleaners contribute significantly to this indoor pollution.
If you are surprised by these facts you are not alone. Green-washing by major manufacturers of home cleaning products is rampant. Claims such as "non-toxic," "eco-safe," "natural," "plant-based," and "environmentally-friendly" are meaningless without an industry standard in place. You may be surprised to learn that no government agency requires manufacturers to disclose their ingredients. You may also be surprised to learn that some of the top-selling household cleaning products contain denatured ethanol (which can cause central nervous system depression) and alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (a known pesticide). Most major-brand glass cleaners contain glycol ethers that have been shown to cause reproductive problems. Major-brand furniture polishes contain silicones, butane gas, and propane. All, while good at cleaning your furniture, are VOCs (volatile organic compounds). And, it gets scarier: most air fresheners contain formaldehyde, which is very toxic and is a known carcinogen.

At GreenStar, we have selected cleaning products that have been manufactured in an environmentally responsible way. We use only Green Seal™ and GreenGuard® certified products. We have carefully chosen products that are truly non-toxic, natural, biodegradable, concentrated and hypoallergenic. In addition, our HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaners and microfiber cleaning cloths (preferred by the American Lung Association) are eco-friendly. We believe your home should be the safest place on earth.
